How to crop questions from a PDF (3 steps)
- Drop your exam PDF into the box above. It loads locally — your Network tab stays empty.
- Drag a rectangle around each question. A box that spans a page break becomes one stitched question. Numbered in draw order.
- Click Download ZIP. You get one PDF per question (Question-1.pdf, Question-2.pdf, …) ready to drop into a new test or a question bank.
Frequently asked questions
How do I crop questions from a PDF test book?
Load your PDF above, then drag a rectangle around each question. Every crop becomes its own numbered PDF (Question-1.pdf, Question-2.pdf, …), bundled into a single ZIP. If a question runs across a page break, the tool stitches the two partials into one continuous file automatically.
Is this really free, with no upload?
Yes. The PDF is rendered, cropped, and rebuilt entirely inside your browser using pdf.js and Canvas. Open DevTools → Network while using it and you will see zero file requests, because your exam paper never leaves your device.
Can I crop a question that spans two pages?
Yes — that is the case most tools get wrong. Draw a box that starts on the bottom of one page and ends on the next; QuestionCropper exports the two fragments as one continuous question PDF, in reading order.
What file format are the cropped questions?
Each question is a standalone PDF at print resolution, named with the prefix you choose (default Question-1.pdf, Question-2.pdf, …). Drop them straight into a new test paper, an LMS, or a question bank.
Does it work on scanned or photographed PDFs?
Cropping is pixel-based, so it works on scanned tests and photographed worksheets too — you are selecting a region, not extracting text. That makes it ideal for building a question bank from old printed exams.
How many pages can I crop at once?
The free tier handles documents up to 25 pages with unlimited questions. Larger exam booklets are on the Pro roadmap ($9 one-time when it launches — no subscription).
Why no other "crop questions" web tool exists
Most PDF tools upload your file to a server, and most "crop PDF" utilities only trim margins — none of them treat a question as the unit. Teachers on Reddit have asked for exactly this for years and the only answer was an iPhone app. QuestionCropper runs the whole pipeline in your browser, so a confidential exam paper or a student's test never touches the internet, and the crop logic understands questions that cross a page break. Need to redact a PDF instead? Same privacy-first engine, next door.
Need this inside your school or company?
We build private, browser-based document tools — the same engine that powers this page, white-labelled for your team. Files never leave the user's device, so there is nothing to upload, store, or leak.
